Integrating Technology into Instruction





·         Now that you have a deeper understanding of the different learning theories and learning styles, how has your view on how you learn changed?

Understanding various learning theories such as:  Cognitivism, Behaviorism, Constructivism, Social Learning, and Connectivism gives the instructional designer a better framework by which to create effective learning vehicles for learners of all age groups.

Understanding Learner Motivation is critical to engaging the learner as well as understanding their Learning Styles to develop Strategies for Integrating Technology into Instruction.

I can also say that after reflecting upon my own Personal Learning Style, I have a deeper understanding of the Learning Theories presented in this course. This also brings to the forefront the fact that an Instructional Designer has to take into account the various ways in which the learners engage in learning, and that that process may differ from the designer.


·         What have you learned about the various learning theories and learning styles over the past weeks that can further explain your own personal learning preferences?

I think it would be a good time to distinguish these terms of: Learning Theories, Learning Styles, and Learning Strategy.  According to Dr. Anthony Artino Jr.:

 “A “learning style,” a learning theory, and a learning strategy are not the same. The term “learning styles’’ refers to the notion that “individuals differ in regard to what mode of instruction or study is most effective for them” (Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer, & Bjork, 2008, p. 105).

On the other hand, a learning theory explains the underlying psychological processes that influence learning. As such, it usually includes a set of assumptions about key aspects of the learning process that can be used to generate hypotheses which can then be tested empirically (i.e., through experimentation).

And finally, a learning strategy is a cognitive or behavioral activity used to improve learning (e.g., selecting, organizing, and integrating new information, studying in a quite place, using mnemonic devices to remember new material). Try not to confuse these concepts” (Artino, Jr. 2012).

I have learned that by utilizing my own personal learning preferences, I actually involve more of my brain in the learning process.  So, in a sense, you could say that by following your strong suit you can maximize the learning experience by increasing your ability to remember what you have learned.


What I have learned about the various Learning Theories is that learners              tend to learn more effectively in social settings where they can exchange ideas. I am drawn to Vygotsky’s viewpoint that each person has a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which I would explain as what they know about something, and that the instructional designer’s job is to bring them from their ZPD to a place of greater comprehension about the subject being learned.  “So in Vygotsky's mind, the way that you really advance people forward is by giving them the structure they need so that that zone of proximal development moves into increasingly more challenging activities and material” (Ormrod).

Of course Learning Theories are really just ideas that we scaffold from to construct schemas to better understand how we learn.  In that sense, we can understand that no one Learning Theory can completely explain how we learn.  Of course if you are really bored right now, you could go to this site and look at 50 learning theories at Instructional Design, http://www.instructionaldesign.org/index.html

“This lack of attention to the nature of learning inevitably leads to an impoverishment of education. It isn't simply that the process is less effective as a result, but what passes for education can actually diminish well-being” ( Smith, M. K. 2003).  I think maybe Smith has a point to consider here about the nature of learning.  What do you think?

·         What role does technology play in your learning (i.e., as a way to search for information, to record information, to create, etc.).

Well, let’s see, if you were to take away my three computers and internet service, my learning would almost stop.  I say almost because I do have a limited library of books to read.  As far as searching, and recording information in order to create works of learning, I would really be hurting without the internet and my computers to aid in the learning process. 

Consider the mobile devices and the clouds that enable us to: learn, search, record and create the products of learning.  Is there an APP for that?  Stick around and there will be soon.  My point here is that technology is indispensable in the learning process!

This quote that Dr. Ormrod makes brings to mind using technology in the learning process.  “So in Vygotsky's mind, the way that you really advance people forward is by giving them the structure they need so that that zone of proximal development moves into increasingly more challenging activities and material” (Ormrod).  Do you see that connection?

“The teacher’s central task is to structure the learning environment so that learners can construct understandings. To this end, teachers need to provide the instructional support (scaffolding) that will assist learners to maximize their learning in their ZPD. The teacher’s role is to provide a supportive environment, not to lecture and give answers” (Ormrod, 2009, p. 222).  This is another interesting thought in that the internet and my computer, smart phone, and tablet, etc. are that supportive environment needed to provide that scaffolding process!  I would like to hear your take on the matter.

More Thoughts on Connectivism

I would like to reflect upon the following questions and would like your opinion as well:

·        How has your network changed the way you learn?

Technology, being an ever evolving catalyst, drives the method by which we learn. Our network possibilities open doors to more and more available information by which we sift through in hopes of gleaning  a deeper meaning  of concepts and schemas that we pursue.  I remember going to, “The Stacks”, to gather information.  What an inefficient way to learn anything! 

My network starts with a computer and the internet.  I have access  to most information that I need right at my computer.  I can gather facts and opinions from a rich field of knowledge, if I screen and sift through the total information available.

·        Which digital tools best facilitate learning for you?

·        How do you gain new knowledge when you have questions?

When searching information about  certain questions, I use the Boolean  logic method to search the world wide web.

“Boolean logic allows you to combine words and phrases into search statements to retrieve documents from searchable databases. This tutorial will show you how to utilize Boolean logic to search the Internet”. http://www.internettutorials.net/boolean.asp

Keeping in mind that sites ending with .gov or .edu will pass the CAPOW test : Currency, Authority, Purpose, and Objectivity, and Writing Styles. Sites ending in: .net, .org, or .com will not usually pass the CAPOW test.

·        In what ways does your personal learning network support or refute the central tenets of connectivism?

My personal learning network supports the central tenets of connectivism. Let me give you a few bullet points to back that up:

·         Discussion boards provide diversity of opinions.

·         Using: Walden University’s online Library, Google Scholar, educational journals, and blogs provide nodes of  information sources.

·         Use of computer and internet.

·         Constant research into Instructional Design Issues to increase knowledge.

I think you get the picture that Connectivism is definitely present in today’s eLearning environment.

George Siemens has a good journal article defining the central tenets of Connectivism:

“Connectivism is driven by the understanding that decisions are based on rapidly altering foundations. New information is continually being acquired. The ability to draw distinctions between important and unimportant information is vital. The ability to recognize when new information alters the landscape based on decisions made yesterday is also critical.

Principles of Connectivism:

·         Learning and knowledge rests in diversity of opinions.

·         Learning is a process of connecting specialized nodes or information sources.

·         Learning may reside in non-human appliances.

·         Capacity to know more is more critical than what is currently known

·         Nurturing and maintaining connections is needed to facilitate continual learning.

·         Ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts is a core skill.

·         Currency (accurate, up-to-date knowledge) is the intent of all connectivist learning activities.

Decision-making is it a learning process. Choosing what to learn and the meaning of incoming information is seen through the lens of a shifting reality. While there is a right answer now, it may be wrong tomorrow due to alterations in the information climate affecting the decision”(Siemens, G., 2005).

Information Processing (IP)

Dr. Michael Orey of the Department of Educational Psychology and Instructional Technology, University of Georgia has an interesting article on Information processing (IP).  This process by which we learn in cognitive theory is often compared to how a computer’s processor functions.  When we speak of learning often times there is a reference to short-term memory (STM) or working memory (WM) and Long Term Memory (LTM).   The computer has three components: sensory register (SR), short-term memory (STM) or working memory, and long-term memory (LTM).  Can you see the similarities?  Humans have sensory registers (SR), but we call them hearing (echoic) and seeing (iconic). It interesting to note that a Power Point presentation is more effective when narration is added that is explaining what the visual presentation is illustrating.

I recommend that you take a look at this article as Dr. Orey does an excellent job explaining these concepts about the brain and learning, information processing theory, and problem-solving methods during the learning process.

THE BRAIN & LEARNING

Here is a site that I find myself going back to time and again.  Why, you may ask?  In my quest to understand how the human mind works in relation to learning theories as it applies to instructional design & technology,  this has been a good resource to find explanations in the field of psychology.  Take for example the article explaining Pioneers of Psychology: Lev Vygotsky by Kendra Cherry.  Vygotsky’s sociocultural theories, including the concepts of proximal development and guided practice in learning, are very revealing as to how we learn.  The application here for the instructional designer suggests that learning is a social process.  We then have to remember to engage our learners in eLearning venues with social interactions from instructor and students among themselves to maximize learning opportunities.  Read the article listed here for more understanding on the topic of the brain and learning, information processing theory, and problem-solving methods during the learning process.

Three Valuable Resources For Instructional Design

Fadnavis Nagesh, Manager, Operations at TechBuddy Consulting, has a very interesting discussion group in the Learning, Education and Training Professionals Group on LinkedIn. He discusses a research paper of M. K. Smith entitled, “Learning theory” the encyclopedia of informal education. This resource is a very informative look at the various theories of learning and their applications.   As an instructional designer begins to work they must consider: how we learn, the intended audience, and the method of delivery used.  Knowing this, it is imperative that a through understanding of learning theories and their application be at the forefront of consideration in any instructional design. Smith’s research paper is a wealth of information (and additional resources) that reads like a review guide into the theories of how we learn.  I highly recommend this blog and this paper for your review.

When we approach the subject of the theory of learning, how do you think the application changes in the instructional design of e-learning? “We define e-learning as training delivered on a computer (including CD-ROM, Internet, or Intranet) that is designed to support individual or organized performance goals”(Clark, 2008).  This seems to greatly limit the possibilities when social interaction is deemed to be so valuable in the experience of learning. What are you thoughts?

One topic this Blog discusses is Chickering & Gamson's (1987) 'Seven Principles of Effective Teaching' in which they consider good practices for an eLearning instructor to be: ”encourages contact between students and faculty, develops reciprocity and cooperation among students, encourages active learning, gives prompt feedback, emphasizes time on task, communicates high expectations, and respects diverse talents and ways of learning”.

These considerations help to promote a positive environment for learning and should be concomitant with instructional design.

This blog also contains articles on the following: Benefits of Learning Online, Online Course Design and Faculty Development, Constructivist training for Online Teachers and Reviewing Synchronous Learning Objects.  As you can see, there are a lot of discussions that would benefit an instructional designer.
